Fellowship One Year (PGY-5)
Clinical and Educational Resources
The Pain Management Center is comprised of:
- Three examination rooms and two additional rooms suitable for both examinations and minor procedures (trigger point injections, IV regional blocks, peripheral nerve injections, etc.), as well as recovery
- Two fluoroscopy rooms for invasive blocks (also for minor blocks in medically unstable patients)
- Offices for director, pain physicians, nurse practitioner, clinical nurse specialists, and pain fellows and residents (in part overlapping with these same individuals' clinical offices), Pain Center manager, and receptionist area
- Room for staff meetings, small group lectures, or small patient group meetings, and fellowship space
- Nursing station, file area, copy machine, fax and locked medication closet
Research Space and Facilities
The current Pain Management Center space and facilities is used for clinical studies in collaboration with the Anesthesiology Department at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center.
Didactics
A weekly, regularly scheduled lecture series is organized for staff, fellows, residents, and other allied healthcare personnel to present topics and case studies.
Research opportunities may include those focused on:
- Cancer pain
- Outcomes research and evidence-based medicine
- Joint clinical studies with other St. Elizabeth's Medical Center departments (e.g., orthopedics, oncology and radiology) and other multidisciplinary pain management centers
- Pharmaceuticals
- Radiology
- Palliative care
- Complementary therapies
Curriculum
The pain management trainee in the Pain Management Program at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center will gain a rich experience in the evaluation and management of acute, chronic, cancer, and non-cancer pain in the adult patient in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
Evaluation
As described previously, the trainee plays a major role as a consultant to other specialties. Primary care physicians and specialties such as neurology, neurosurgery, orthopedics, and oncology provide the majority of requests for consultations.

Applications start day is April 1 and the deadline is August 31. Applicants are required to apply through ERAS only.
Applicant Requirements
Prior to starting the Pain Program, the applicant should be expected to graduate from a residency program in the United States accredited by the ACGME in:
- Anesthesiology
- Physical medicine and rehabilitation
- Neurology
- Psychiatry
After review of the application, appropriate individuals are invited for an interview. During that visit, the applicant meets with pain faculty and current pain fellows. Each faculty member interviewing the candidate completes a written evaluation. Residents are selected after review of their application data and interview information.Our interview season extends from May through September.
