Cardiothoracic Anesthesia Fellowship

St. Elizabeth's Medical Center

The Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesia Fellowship at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center is a 12-month program offered in the CA-4 year. The program imparts the knowledge and experience necessary to allow each fellow to become a competent cardiothoracic anesthesiologist.

The fellowship is a comprehensive program incorporating rotations through a series of services that provide the backbone of training and supervised experience across a wide variety of settings including operating rooms, electrophysiology and echocardiography labs, and intensive care unit.

Cardiothoracic anesthesia fellows are expected to function with more independence and learn to deliver anesthesia for routine procedures as well as critically ill patients with minimal supervision.

The autonomy, clinical experience and exposure to all aspects of cardiovascular anesthesia prepare the candidate to manage patients with cardiovascular disease with a superior degree of confidence.

The fellow is expected to successfully complete the certifying examination for intraoperative tracheoesophageal echocardiography offered by the National Board of Echocardiography. The fellowship program functions in conjunction with the core residency program in anesthesiology. The Division of Cardiology at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center is an integral part of fellowship training in echocardiography, with additional exposure to cardiac catheterizations and electrophysiology.

Clinical training occurs principally in the cardiac operating rooms at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center. An optional month of pediatric cardiac anesthesia rotation is offered at Boston Children's Hospital.

The fellowship program is structured to ensure optimal patient care while providing an opportunity to develop advanced skills in clinical care and judgment, teaching, administration and research.
