Anesthesiology Residency

Building Clinical Mastery through Education, Inquiry, and Experience

The Anesthesia Residency Program at Boston Medical Center – Brighton (BMC Brighton), offered by the Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care, and Pain Medicine, provides an excellent educational and clinical environment to facilitate the learning, critical thinking, clinical knowledge, and procedural skills expected of a consultant in anesthesia that translate to the operating room, critical care unit, pain management center, medical subspecialty procedural unit, and emergency room.

The teaching faculty cultivates the sense of responsibility, professionalism, commitment, and inquisitiveness that are so essential to the practice of anesthesia.

By the completion of the residency, our graduates are capable of pursuing careers in either academic or community-based practice.

Messages from Our Leadership

Program Structure

The educational program of the anesthesia residency is designed to meet the criteria of the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA), as well as our department’s own educational goal to provide each resident with a comprehensive background in all areas of modern anesthetic practice.

Overview

Our program spans up to four years, beginning with a broad medical foundation and progressing to advanced anesthesia training and individualized subspecialty experience.

We accept residents into both the PGY-1 fundamental clinical skills year (Categorical) and directly into the CA-1 anesthesia year.

Residents spend most of their CA-1 year at BMC Brighton mastering the fundamentals of clinical anesthesiology. In the CA-2 year, they rotate to affiliated hospitals across eastern Massachusetts for specialized experiences. The CA-3 year offers flexibility and electives that align with personal goals and fellowship interests.

Our residency also offers a comprehensive didactic lecture series and opportunities to conduct and present research.

Scholarly Work

Our residents are actively engaged in scholarly activity that advances anesthesiology education, clinical practice, and research—including peer-reviewed publications, presentations, educational innovations, and quality improvement projects.

Meet Our Residents

One of the greatest strengths of our program is the diversity of our residents.

The BMC Brighton Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care, and Pain Medicine also offers a one-year (PGY-5) fellowship in pain management. Trainees gain rich experience in the evaluation and management of acute, chronic, cancer, and non-cancer pain in the adult patient in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
