Political Advocacy Guidelines 

BMC Health System is a large and diverse organization comprised of compassionate individuals with a range of viewpoints. Please respect your colleagues’ individuality and avoid conversations and communications that try to influence colleagues to support a party, candidate, cause or campaign, including requests for campaign contributions. 

Under federal law, BMC Health System and its related nonprofit organizations may not endorse, support, or oppose any political parties or candidates for office. To help ensure that our system remains compliant with federal law, no individual employee can imply that BMC Health System supports or opposes any party, candidate, or campaign. This includes ensuring you are not in BMC Health System branded clothing or clinical apparel if you choose to attend a political event. 

Nonprofit organizations are allowed to advocate for or against legislation, regulations, or other policy proposals, and BMC Health System regularly does that on behalf of its organizations. Employees can respectfully advocate for legislation or policies in their own names and on their own time, but there are a few important steps you should take to ensure clarity and respectful engagement: 

• Ensure any written statements or expressions of advocacy clearly indicate: “These opinions are my own and do not reflect the position of my employer.”
• Keep conversations with all individuals respectful and agree to disagree, as needed.
